safe and sound

one of my favourite times during the workday is putting a child down for their nap. not because i finally get a break, but because of the quiet intimacy that takes place as the lights dim, they become drowsy, and the lullaby begins.  their eyes are closing, their mind is drifting, and they are feeling secured in my arms.  sometimes i wonder at what age they will lose the vulnerability to be lulled into slumber by the softness of tone or the warmth of an embrace.  around when do we become fortifiers of walls and delegators of emotion?  all too soon i suppose.  all too soon.

the world is very lonely for those that live behind walls and perhaps way too scary for those that are not trusting of emotion.  but walls block the radiant sunshine and emotions remind us that we are alive.   the temptation is to hide away.  the desire is to be found by those we can trust and forgotten by those that would only do us harm.  but to be here, to be present, to be loved and to be actively loving… this is what we were made for.

You will not be afraid when you go to bed, and you will sleep soundly through the night.

Proverbs 3:24

A lullaby for those living out in the open, those venturing on trusting again, and those who are not yet ready.

Don’t put your trust in walls, ‘Cause walls will only crush you when they fall.

We all face that tough dilemma of deciding whether to risk being known and vulnerable or to be safe and closed off. It isn’t a simple process as we grow older and face harsh realities and hurt, but I agree that we were made to be in relationship with God and with one another. A very nice post and beautiful song.
